Honoring a Legacy of Hope

The Bishop Paride Taban Girls Orphanage School

The late Bishop Paride Taban was more than a religious leader; he was a beacon of peace, a champion for the vulnerable, and a builder of futures. A Nobel Peace Prize laureate, his lifelong mission was to heal a nation torn by conflict, believing deeply that education was the cornerstone of peace and reconciliation.

To honor his profound legacy, we are proud to announce the Bishop Paride Taban Educational Foundation (BPTEF), an initiative born from his unwavering commitment to the children of South Sudan. Our first project continues his most personal work: establishing a Girls Orphanage School in Nimule, Eastern Equatoria.

Continuing a Lifelong Ministry

Bishop Taban’s compassion for orphans was not theoretical. In 1994, he opened an orphanage school in Uganda for South Sudanese children separated from their parents by war. He established schools in Narus and Kuron and formed women’s empowerment committees, tirelessly advocating that every child, especially the most marginalized, deserved the light of education.

This new Foundation is named in his honor to ensure that his mission does not end with his passing. We are picking up the torch he carried so high, focusing on a group he held especially dear: orphaned girls.

The Urgent Need: A Crisis for Girls

In South Sudan, educational inequality has existed for generations. Girls are often the last to be sent to school and the first to be withdrawn. For orphaned girls who have lost parents to war and illness, the situation is catastrophic. Without family support, they are left with no safety net, often forced into early marriage or dangerous situations just to survive. They are deprived of their childhood, their safety, and their future.

This Foundation is our answer. It is a commitment to the belief Bishop Taban held dear: that empowering a girl through education transforms not just her life, but her entire community.

The Vision He Inspired

Our mission is a direct reflection of Bishop Taban’s work:

  • To Provide Quality Education: Offering a formal, innovative education to orphaned girls, just as he did.
  • To Empower for Independence: Instilling the skills and confidence needed to pursue higher education and gainful employment.
  • To Uphold His Values: Operating with the principles of Love, Forgiveness, Openness, and Loyalty that guided his life.

Our vision is to see his dream realized: a South Sudan where education eradicates poverty and builds lasting peace, one girl at a time.

A Living Memorial: The Ripple Effect

A building alone is not a legacy. The true memorial to Bishop Taban will be seen in the lives of the girls we serve. By educating a girl, we continue his work in:

  • Discouraging early marriage by providing a path to a self-sufficient future.
  • Improving public health, as educated women make informed decisions for themselves and their families.
  • Fostering female leaders who will participate in civic life and reconciliation, just as he did.

A Sustainable Future, In His Name

Bishop Taban was a pragmatic visionary. In his spirit, this project is designed for long-term sustainability. We will begin with community consultations, just as he would, building trust with local leaders. We will construct a safe school environment and plan to acquire farmland to achieve food self-sufficiency—a practical step toward independence that he would have championed.
